Advantages
- Renewable: sunlight is replenished every day.
- No fuel and no direct emissions while generating electricity.
- Modular: systems can be small or large and expanded later.
- Low running requirements: panels have no moving parts.
- Long-lasting: quality panels commonly carry long performance warranties.
- Energy independence: with storage, solar can reduce reliance on the grid or fuel.
Limitations
- Variable output: generation depends on daylight and weather and stops at night.
- Space: systems need unshaded roof or ground area.
- Upfront cost: most of the cost is paid at installation, especially when batteries are included.
- Storage needs: evening and backup supply require batteries, which have a shorter life than panels.
- End of life: panels and batteries need responsible recycling or disposal.
Good system design addresses most of these limitations by matching the system to the site and the way electricity is used.
